Phillip Dutton's Early Life and Career
Phillip Dutton was born in Nyngan, New South Wales, Australia. He loved riding horses from a young age. He went to Newington College from 1976 to 1979. Phillip continued to ride and train in Australia.
Moving to the United States
In 1991, Phillip decided to move to the United States. He wanted to train in a place where the competition was even tougher. This move helped him become a better rider.
Olympic Success for Australia
Phillip represented Australia in three Olympic Games. He was part of the Australian team that won gold medals in team eventing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also competed in four World Equestrian Games for Australia.
Top Rider in the U.S.
Phillip became very active in the U.S. eventing world. He won the USEA Leading Rider of the Year title many times. He won it in 1998, and then every year from 2000 to 2006. In 2005, he was also ranked the number one FEI World Event Rider.
Becoming a U.S. Citizen
In 2006, Phillip Dutton made a big decision. He announced that he would become a citizen of the United States. This meant he could ride for the U.S. team. He thanked the Australian Equestrian Federation for their support. He said it was an honor to represent Australia for 12 years.
Riding for the U.S. Team
Phillip started riding for the U.S. in 2007. In April 2007, he placed second at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day event. Later that year, he won a team gold medal and an individual silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games with his horse, Truluck.
In April 2008, Phillip won his first Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Olympic Bronze Medal
In 2016, Phillip Dutton and his horse, Mighty Nice, won an individual bronze medal. This was at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It was a great achievement for him and the U.S. team.
Awards and Honors
Phillip Dutton has received special recognition for his achievements. In 1997, he was given the Medal of the Order of Australia. This is a high honor in Australia. In 2001, he was added to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
