Phillipsburg is a small, rural place in Texas, United States. It's not an official city or town, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government.

Phillipsburg is located in southern Washington County. It sits along State Highway 36, south of a larger town called Brenham. Interestingly, the name Phillipsburg isn't usually found on modern maps today. Even the local cemetery and the old Lutheran church, which is still used for worship, are actually in the next county over, Austin County.

Where is Phillipsburg?

Phillipsburg is found along State Highway 36. It's about 6 miles (10 km) south of downtown Brenham. A railway line, the BNSF Railway, runs right next to the highway here.

Several small roads connect to State Highway 36 in Phillipsburg. One important road is Phillipsburg Church Road. This road is close to the line between Austin and Washington counties. It leads to the historic St. Paul Lutheran Church. You can find a special historical marker at the church, which tells more about its past. This road also takes you to the Phillipsburg Cemetery.

A Look at Phillipsburg's History

Phillipsburg was mainly settled by people of German heritage. In 1889, the community got its own post office. It was also located along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, which was important for travel and trade.

By 1891, Phillipsburg had become a more important place than a nearby settlement called Pesch. It grew into a key supply point by 1896. The St. Paul Church was built in 1901. Twenty years later, it officially joined the Texas Lutheran church group.

The post office in Phillipsburg closed in 1904. In 1936, about 100 people lived there, and there was one business. The number of people living in Phillipsburg dropped to 40 by 1952. By 1970, there were no businesses left. In the year 2000, about 40 people were still reported to be living in the area.
