Her Work in the Iowa House
Phyllis Thede worked on many important topics in the Iowa House. She was part of several groups called committees. These groups study different issues and help make new laws.
She served on committees for Ethics, Local Government, and Natural Resources. She was also a main leader, called the ranking member, on the Environmental Protection committee. This means she was the most senior member of her political party on that committee. She also helped with the Health and Human Services budget and was on the Human Rights Board.
Her Early Life and Family
Phyllis Thede was born in 1954 in Chicago, Illinois. Her family was African-American. They had moved to Chicago from the southern United States. This move was part of a big event called the Great Migration. Many African-American families moved north in the early 1900s to find new jobs and better lives.
Later, her family moved to Creston, Iowa. Her father worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad there. Phyllis went to local schools in Creston.
Education and Marriage
Phyllis started college at Southwestern Community College. There, she met Dave Thede. They got married in 1974. Dave's family had come to the U.S. from Germany in the 1840s.
Phyllis and Dave then moved to Le Mars, Iowa. They both went to Westmar College.
Her Work and Family Life
In 1976, Dave finished college and started teaching. Phyllis also began working in local schools. They had three daughters. Their first daughter, Robin Thede, was born in Spencer. Their two younger daughters were born in Davenport, Iowa. The family lived in Davenport from 1980 to 2004.
Today, Phyllis and Dave live in Bettendorf. They are proud grandparents to several grandchildren.
Phyllis Thede worked in different office jobs at schools. She also became very active in the school workers' union. A union is a group of workers who join together to protect their rights and improve their working conditions. She helped to discuss and agree on work contracts. She also gave advice when there were problems at work.
