Phyllis Mary Wang Wise (Chinese: 王斐丽) is a talented biomedical researcher. She is currently the first chief executive officer and president of the Colorado Longitudinal Study. This study helps scientists learn more about health over a long time.

Early Life and Education

Phyllis Wise is the daughter of Mamie Wang and Shih-Chun Wang.

She earned her first degree, a bachelor's in biology, from Swarthmore College in 1967. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Michigan. There, she received a master's degree in 1969 and a doctorate (PhD) in zoology in 1972. After finishing her doctorate, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the same university until 1974.

Becoming a University Professor

In 1976, Phyllis Wise began her career as an assistant professor. She taught physiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Later, in 1993, she became a full professor and led the physiology department at the University of Kentucky.

In 2002, she moved to the University of California-Davis. There, she became the dean of the College of Biological Sciences. She also held important professor roles in neurobiology, physiology, and medicine.

Leadership at the University of Washington

From 2005, Wise served as a top leader at the University of Washington. She was the provost and vice president for academic affairs. This means she was in charge of many academic programs.

From 2010 to 2011, she also served as the interim president of the university. During her time there, she helped create the College of the Environment. This new college focuses on studying and protecting our planet.

From 2011 to 2015, Phyllis Wise was the chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As chancellor, she was the main leader of the university.
