Phyllis Wise was born to Mamie Wang and Shih-Chun Wang.

She went to Swarthmore College and earned a degree in biology in 1967. Later, she studied at the University of Michigan. There, she received her master's degree in 1969 and her doctorate in zoology in 1972. She continued her research at the University of Michigan until 1974.

Career in Academia

Phyllis Wise has had a long and important career in universities. She has been a professor and a leader at several major schools.

University Professor Roles

In 1976, Wise started as a professor of physiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Physiology is the study of how living things work.

By 1993, she became a professor and head of the physiology department at the University of Kentucky. In 2002, she moved to the University of California-Davis. There, she became the dean of the College of Biological Sciences. She also held special professor titles in neurobiology and physiology.

Leading the University of Washington
