The Story of Pibb Xtra
Pibb Xtra has an interesting history! It first came out in 1972 with the name "Peppo." The Coca-Cola Company wanted to create a drink that could compete with another popular soda called Dr Pepper.
However, the name "Peppo" was too similar to "Dr Pepper." Because of this, Dr Pepper sued The Coca-Cola Company. So, the name was changed to "Mr. Pibb" in 1974.
A New Taste for Mr. Pibb
In 1980, Mr. Pibb got a new recipe. The company wanted to make it taste even better. They even printed "New Taste" on the products so everyone would know about the change.
Becoming Pibb Xtra
In 2001, Mr. Pibb changed again. It was given a new name, Pibb Xtra, and a new, bolder flavor. This new taste was described as a "spicy cherry" flavor, which was meant to be stronger than the original Mr. Pibb.
Since then, Pibb Xtra has been known as a "refreshing, spicy cherry alternative" to other cola drinks.
Different Kinds of Pibb
There are a few different versions of Pibb Xtra you might find.
Main Pibb Flavors
- Pibb Xtra: This is the main drink introduced in 2001. It replaced the original Mr. Pibb with its new "spicy cherry" flavor.
- Pibb Zero: This is the sugar-free version of Pibb Xtra. It replaced the old "Diet Mr. Pibb."
Fun with Coca-Cola Freestyle
Coca-Cola Freestyle machines are special soda fountains that let you choose from many different flavors. Pibb is available in some of these machines, especially in places where Dr Pepper isn't sold by Coca-Cola. This has helped introduce Pibb to new areas and even new countries!
In 2011, Pibb Xtra added two new flavors just for these machines:
- Pibb Xtra Cherry
- Pibb Xtra Cherry-Vanilla
Pibb Zero also got these new cherry and cherry-vanilla flavors. In 2018, Pibb Xtra Strawberry was also released in Freestyle machines.
