History of Pickering Town Centre
The mall first opened its doors in 1972. Back then, it was known as the Sheridan Mall and had about 80 stores.
Mall Renovations
The first big changes to the mall happened in 1998. Later, in 2008 and 2009, Pickering Town Centre got a major update. This project cost $17 million! They put in new floors, ceilings, and lights. They also added more places to sit and a new elevator. All these changes gave the mall a fresh, modern look.
Flood in 2016
On November 28, 2016, the mall had a flood. A water pipe broke, and water covered many stores on the lower level. Even Santa's Castle, a popular holiday spot, had to close. Luckily, most stores were able to open again just a few days later, by December 1, 2016.
New Stores and Changes
Over the years, many stores have changed at the mall. In 2015, a store called Target closed down. In 2017, that big space was split into three new places:
- A Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH outlet store, which sells designer clothes at lower prices.
- A Cineplex Cinemas 11 and VIP movie theater, where you can watch the latest films.
- A Farm Boy food market, which sells fresh groceries.
In 2018, even more new stores arrived. These included Winners/HomeSense, which sell home goods and clothing, and a Hakim Optical store for glasses. There are also plans to change the areas where the old Famous Players movie theater and Sears department store used to be.
Main Stores at PTC
The main stores in a mall are often called "anchors." They are usually the biggest stores that attract many shoppers. Here are some of the main stores at Pickering Town Centre:
