Picketpost Mountain is a well-known mountain located right outside the town of Superior, Arizona. It's about 40 miles (64 km) (64 kilometers) east of the big Phoenix Metro Area.

This mountain sits in the southern desert part of the Tonto National Forest. It's close to, but not actually part of, the famous Superstition Mountains. Picketpost Mountain is a very popular spot for hikers. It's also famous for a unique mailbox found right at its very top! This mailbox holds special log books for people who hike the Picketpost Mountain Trail.

Why is it Called Picketpost Mountain?

The mountain's interesting name comes from a military camp that was set up long ago. In 1870, General George Stoneman established this camp at the base of the mountain.

The soldiers at the camp started calling the mountain "Picket Post." This was because they used it as a lookout point, like a sentinel, to watch for any attacks and keep their camp safe. Over time, this military camp grew and eventually became the town of Superior that we know today.
