Pico Almanzor is the tallest mountain in central Spain. It is found in the Sierra de Gredos mountain range. This range is located in the Ávila province.

The Name of Pico Almanzor
This mountain gets its name from a powerful leader named Al-Mansur. His name means "the victorious" in Arabic. Al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir was a famous general and important leader. He lived in Muslim Spain during the late 900s. This time was part of the Caliphate of Cordoba, a large Muslim kingdom.
His real name was Muhammad bin Abi Amir. The people living in Spain at that time, called the Moors, gave him the title Al-Mansur. They gave him this name because he won many battles.
During his travels, Al-Mansur passed by this mountain. He was very impressed by how beautiful it looked. That's how the mountain got its special name.
Climbing History
The first people to climb Pico Almanzor were M. González de Amezúa and José Ibrián. They reached the top in September 1899.
Later, in 1903, Espada, Ontañón, and Abricarro made the first winter climb. This means they climbed it when it was covered in snow and ice.
In 1960, a large iron cross was placed on the very top of the mountain. It stands about 1 meter (3 feet) tall.
