Pictou is a small, quiet place in Huerfano County, Colorado, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger Huerfano County.
The Story of Pictou
The community of Pictou began a long time ago. In 1889, a post office was opened there. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office helped the people living in Pictou stay connected. It stayed open for many years, until 1932.
Pictou got its name from a place far away in Canada. A mining official named Thomas Lowther lived in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada, before he came to Colorado. He named this new community in Colorado after his hometown.
