History of Pierre Part
Pierre Part was started by French settlers called Acadians. They came here after being forced to leave their homes in Acadia (now part of Canada) in 1755. For a long time, the town was hard to reach because it was surrounded by water. There were no roads until the middle of the 1900s.
Before the Great Depression (a time when many people lost their jobs and money), most people in Pierre Part were fishermen. After the Depression, many men had to find other jobs. They worked in logging, building levees (walls to hold back water), and in the growing oil industry in Louisiana. Today, fewer people continue the old ways of fishing and living off the land.
Pierre Part experienced flooding in 1973 when the Morganza Spillway was opened. This happened during a big flood of the Mississippi River.
The TV show Swamp People on the History Channel features a Cajun family, the Landrys, who live in Pierre Part. The show started in 2010 and is very popular.
The Bayou Corne Sinkhole
On August 3, 2012, a large hole in the ground, called the Bayou Corne Sinkhole, appeared about 3 miles from Pierre Part. People in Pierre Part who lived near the sinkhole noticed strange smells and bubbles in the water. Because of this, the governor asked people in the nearby community of Bayou Corne to leave their homes.
The sinkhole grew bigger over time, which worried the people of Pierre Part. They were concerned it might reach Louisiana Highway 70, a main road. Many people believed a salt mining company was responsible for the sinkhole. A court later decided that three companies shared the blame for the disaster. As of 2019, the sinkhole is still growing slowly, and the community of Bayou Corne is empty, with most homes taken down.
