Pierre Max Rosenberg, born on April 13, 1936, is a famous French art historian. He is an expert in art history, a curator (someone who manages museum collections), and a professor. Mr. Rosenberg used to be the director of the Musée du Louvre in Paris, which is one of the world's most famous museums. Since 1995, he has also been a member of the Académie Française, a very important group that protects the French language. In 1987, he was a special professor of fine art at the University of Cambridge.

Early Life and Education

Pierre Rosenberg was born in Paris, France. His family was Jewish. He grew up in the southwestern parts of France, in areas called Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde. For his high school education, he went to the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris.

After high school, he studied at the École du Louvre, a special school for art and archaeology. He also earned a law degree. In 1961, he received a special scholarship called the Henri Focillon Fellowship. This allowed him to study at Yale University in the United States for a year.

His Career as an Art Expert

In 1962, Pierre Rosenberg started working at the Musée du Louvre. He began as an assistant curator in the Department of Paintings. A curator is like a caretaker for a museum's art collection. They research, organize, and display artworks.

Later, in 1977, he was invited to study at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1987, he became a special professor of fine art at the University of Cambridge. He was promoted to curator and then became the director of the Louvre Museum in October 1994. He led the museum until April 13, 2001.

Mr. Rosenberg was chosen to be a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1990. He also joined the American Philosophical Society in 1997. On December 7, 1995, he was elected to the Académie Française. This is a very respected group in France that focuses on the French language and literature. He is also an honorary member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence, Italy.

Throughout his career, Pierre Rosenberg has written many books about French artists from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s. Some of the artists he has studied include Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Nicolas Poussin.

Awards and Recognition

  • In 1995, Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat won the Prize XVIIe. They received this award for their detailed book about the drawings of the artist David.
  • In 1996, Mr. Rosenberg gave the annual A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
  • In 1999, he received a high honor from Italy, becoming a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Personal Life

In 1981, Pierre Rosenberg married Béatrice de Rothschild. Her father was Alain de Rothschild. This was Béatrice's second marriage. She had been married before to Armand Angliviel de la Beaumelle, but he passed away in 1964. Pierre Rosenberg became the stepfather of Marie Angliviel de la Beaumelle.
