Pierre Vago facts for kids

Pierre Vago (born August 30, 1910, in Budapest, died February 1, 2002, in Noisy-sur-École) was a French architect. He was famous around the world. Pierre Vago was known for publishing a magazine called L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui. He was also the General Secretary of the International Union of Architects (UIA). He remained the honorary president of the UIA until he passed away.

A Life in Architecture

Pierre Vago was born in Budapest. He studied architecture in Paris at the École Spéciale d'Architecture (ESA). After World War II, he became very well-known. He designed many housing projects and factories. He also designed the Central Banks for French colonies in Tunisia and Algeria.

One of his most famous and talked-about works was the Basilica of St. Pius X in Lourdes. In 1957, he designed a new apartment building. This building was in the Hansaviertel area of Berlin.

A Voice for Architecture

Pierre Vago became an important architecture critic. He published a very influential magazine. Its name was L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, which means "Today's Architecture."

In 1948, he started the International Union of Architects (UIA). He worked as its General Secretary for many years. His main goal was to bring architects from all over the world together. He wanted them to be part of one big organization. This organization would connect all the national architect groups.

By 2005, the UIA was recognized in 95 countries. It represented about 1.5 million architects. Under Vago's leadership, the UIA even brought together architects from East and West Germany. This happened in the late 1950s. Vago strongly supported peace and friendship between France and Germany.

International Recognition

In 1984, an important event took place. It was called the "Mensch und Raum" (Man and Space) symposium. This international meeting was held at the Vienna University of Technology. Many famous architects attended, including Pierre Vago. Other participants included Justus Dahinden and Frei Otto.

Pierre Vago was also given special honors. He was an honorary member of several important groups. These included the Royal Institute of British Architects in the UK. He was also honored by the German Bund Deutscher Architekten. And he was an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.
