Pietro Germi (born 14 September 1914 – died 5 December 1974) was a famous Italian film director, screenwriter, and actor. He was known for making movies that showed real life in Italy, a style called Italian neorealism. Later, he also became famous for funny movies about Italian society, known as commedia all'italiana.

His movie Divorce Italian Style won him an Oscar for writing. He was also nominated for Best Director for the same film. Seven of his films were shown at the Cannes Film Festival. His comedy The Birds, the Bees and the Italians won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at Cannes in 1966.

Pietro Germi's Life and Career

Pietro Germi studied acting and directing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. While he was a student, he worked many jobs to support himself. He was an extra in movies, a small-part actor, an assistant director, and sometimes a writer.

Germi directed his first movie, Il testimone, in 1945. His early films, including this one, were in the Italian neorealist style. This means they showed real-life problems and stories, often about people from Sicily.

Over the years, Germi started making more satirical comedies instead of serious social dramas. But he still often included characters and themes related to the Sicilian people, which he loved.

Awards and Recognition

Pietro Germi was nominated for Academy Awards for both directing and writing for his film Divorce Italian Style. He won the Oscar for writing. He also won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Birds, the Bees and the Italians. In 1968, his movie Serafino won the Golden Prize at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival.

Germi helped write the scripts for all the movies he directed. He also acted in some of them. He passed away in Rome on 5 December 1974, due to hepatitis.
