About Pig Island

Pig Island is about 110 hectares (270 acres) in size. This means it is roughly the size of 150 football fields! The island is home to many different plants. You can find native plants that are growing back there. There are also some plants that were brought to the island by people.

Animals on Pig Island

Pig Island is also home to a special bird called the buff weka. These birds were moved to Pig Island in 2006. They came from Stevensons Island in Lake Wānaka. Moving animals helps to protect them and their homes.
