Pigeonroost is a small place in Mitchell County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
History
Pigeonroost got its interesting name from a type of bird called the passenger pigeon. Long ago, these pigeons were incredibly common. They used to fly in huge flocks that could darken the sky! They would gather in massive groups to rest and nest, and these places were called "roosts."
Sadly, the passenger pigeon is now extinct, meaning there are no more of them left anywhere in the world. This happened because too many were hunted, and their natural homes were destroyed. The name "Pigeonroost" reminds us of a time when these amazing birds were a big part of the area's nature.
