Pijijiapan is a town and a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Pijijiapan is about halfway between the state of Oaxaca and the country of Guatemala.

Pijijiapan is home to many people. In 2010, the total population of the municipality was 50,079. This was an increase from 46,949 people in 2005. The municipality covers a land area of 2,223.3 square kilometers.
The Town of Pijijiapan
The main town of Pijijiapan had a population of 16,917 in 2010. It is the largest community in the municipality.
Other Communities
Besides the main town, the Pijijiapan municipality has many smaller communities. In 2010, there were 1,305 of these smaller places. Some of the larger ones included:

Notable Events
The 2017 Earthquake
On September 7, 2017, a very strong earthquake happened near Pijijiapan. It had a magnitude of 8.1. The center of the earthquake was about 87 kilometers (54 miles) southwest of the town. This was a powerful natural event that affected the region.
