A Special Agreement for Trade
After a short conflict called the Cenepa War in 1995, Peru and Ecuador signed a peace agreement. This agreement was known as the Brasilia Presidential Act. As part of this act, both countries agreed to a special plan for Pijuayal.
The agreement allowed Ecuador to use two areas in Peru for 50 years. One of these areas is in Pijuayal, and the other is in Saramiriza. These areas were set up as Trade and Navigation Centers (called CECONA for short). The main goal of these centers is to give Ecuador a way to reach the Amazon River. This is important because the Amazon River is a major waterway for trade and travel in South America.
Why are these Centers Important?
Having access to the Amazon River helps Ecuador transport goods and people more easily. It connects Ecuador to a large river system that flows through several countries. This can boost trade and economic growth for Ecuador.
Local Concerns and Protests
Even though the agreement was signed, setting up these centers has been slow. Local tribes living in the Pijuayal area have protested against the plans. They have concerns about how the centers might affect their land and way of life. These protests have caused delays in the project.
