Creating "Sinsajo" for The Hunger Games
One of Pilar Ramírez Tello's most famous creations is the word "sinsajo." This word is the Spanish name for the iconic bird in The Hunger Games series. The English name for this bird is "Mockingjay." The word "sinsajo" was so important that it became the Spanish title for the last two movies in The Hunger Games saga.
Pilar has explained in interviews how she came up with "sinsajo." In the story, Mockingjays were created by accident. First, there were birds called "jabberjays." These birds were made by the Capitol to spy on rebels. They could remember and repeat whole conversations. But the rebels found out and fed the birds false information. So, the Capitol released the jabberjays, expecting them to die out.
However, the jabberjays mated with female mockingbirds. This was a surprise because no one thought they could reproduce with other birds. Their offspring were called mockingjays. In Spanish, "jabberjay" could be "charlajo," which means a bird that talks. The Spanish word for "mockingjay" is "sinsonte." Pilar combined parts of these words to create "sinsajo" for the new bird species.
