Pilgrim Memorial State Park is a special place in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It helps us remember the brave Pilgrims who arrived here long ago. The park is home to two important monuments: Plymouth Rock and the National Monument to the Forefathers.

This park is owned by the state of Massachusetts. It is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. You can even see another related monument, the Myles Standish Monument, across Plymouth Bay in Duxbury.

How the Park Began

Pilgrim Memorial State Park was created in 1920. This was a big year because it marked 300 years since the Pilgrims landed. To make the park, new land was added along the coast. This changed the shoreline around Plymouth Rock.

A special building called a portico was finished around Plymouth Rock. It was designed by famous architects named McKim, Mead and White. Other memorials were also added to the park around this time.

What is Plymouth Rock?

Plymouth Rock is a very famous rock. Many people believe it is where the Pilgrims first stepped ashore in 1620. It's a symbol of their journey to America. Today, the rock is protected inside a beautiful granite structure. You can look down and see it.

The National Monument to the Forefathers

The National Monument to the Forefathers is a huge statue. It stands tall to honor the Pilgrims. This monument reminds us of their courage and beliefs. It is one of the largest granite monuments in the United States.

The monument has a main statue of Faith. Around her are four smaller statues. These represent Morality, Law, Education, and Liberty. Each statue has smaller carvings that tell more of the Pilgrims' story.
