The Pima Barberry (scientific name: Berberis pimana) is a special type of plant. It belongs to a group of plants called the Berberis genus, which is part of the Berberidaceae family. Think of a genus like a close family group, and a family like a bigger group of relatives.

This unique plant grows naturally in the mountains of Mexico. You can find it in a mountain range called the Sierra Madre Occidental. It lives in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora.

Discovering the Pima Barberry

The Pima Barberry was first found in a village called Nabogame. This village is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) northwest of Yepachic, in Chihuahua. The people who live in Nabogame are from an indigenous group known as the Mountain Pima, or Pima Bajo.

Where the Pima Barberry Grows

The Pima Barberry likes to grow in places that are wet and shady. You will often see it along the banks of small streams. It enjoys these damp, cool spots in the mountains.

What Does the Pima Barberry Look Like?

The Pima Barberry is a type of shrub. A shrub is like a small, bushy tree. This plant can grow up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) tall.

  • Leaves: Unlike some plants that keep their leaves all year, the Pima Barberry is deciduous. This means its leaves fall off in certain seasons, usually autumn. Its leaves are also "compound," meaning each leaf is made up of several smaller leaflets. They are thinner than the leaves of most other barberry plants.
  • Berries: The plant produces red berries. These berries are shaped like small eggs. Each berry has several seeds inside, which can be yellow or red. The berries have a sour taste, and sometimes the local people eat them.

Its Plant Relatives

The Pima Barberry is closely related to another plant called Berberis moranensis. Because of its special compound leaves, some scientists think it could also be grouped with plants in the genus Mahonia. This shows how plants can be connected in many ways through their family trees!
