Pinar del Rey is a large public park located in San Roque, Cádiz, a town in southern Spain. This beautiful park is mostly covered with pine trees. A small stream called the Alhaja runs right through the park, adding to its natural charm. It's a great place to explore nature and enjoy the outdoors.

History of Pinar del Rey

How the Park Began

The land where Pinar del Rey now stands was given to the City of Gibraltar way back in 1310. This gift came from King Ferdinand IV of Castile, a ruler of Spain many centuries ago.

Pine Trees for Warships

The forest you see today started to grow around the year 1800. At that time, the Spanish Navy planted many pine trees here. Their plan was to use the wood from these trees to build large warships. These ships were very important for protecting the country and exploring new lands.

A Forest Saved

However, the trees were never cut down for ships. A big sea battle, known as the Battle of Trafalgar, happened in 1805. In this battle, the combined fleets of Spain and France were defeated. Because of this, the Spanish Navy no longer needed the timber from Pinar del Rey. So, the pine trees were left to grow, creating the wonderful park we see today.
