What Does It Look Like?
The bronze-winged parrot is mostly dark in color. It has a small white patch under its chin. Its upper chest has pretty pink speckles. The feathers under its tail are short and red.
Its wings and tail are dark blue, with lighter blue feathers underneath its wings. The top of its head is a dark blue-green. Its back and belly are a dark bronze-green, sometimes with blue-tipped or scattered red feathers. The parrot's beak is a pale yellow.
Adult parrots have pink skin around their eyes. Young parrots, called juveniles, have whitish skin around their eyes. Their belly feathers are more brownish.
Where Do They Live?
You can find bronze-winged parrots in several countries in western South America. These include far western Venezuela, western and central Colombia, western Ecuador, and the far northwestern part of Peru.
They usually live in the top parts, or canopy, of forests and woodlands. This includes both wet and somewhat dry forests. They also live in nearby areas that have tall trees. These parrots might move around a lot in some places. Scientists think they move to find food, but their travel patterns are not fully understood.
How Do They Behave?
Bronze-winged parrots are often seen in pairs. They can also be found in small groups of up to ten birds.
These parrots build their nests in holes inside trees. The female parrot lays white eggs, usually three or four at a time. She sits on the eggs for about 26 days to keep them warm. After the chicks hatch, they stay in the nest for about 70 days before they are ready to fly out on their own.
