History of Piute State Park
The story of Piute State Park begins with the Piute Reservoir. A man named Robert D. Young built this reservoir in 1908. He also built another nearby dam called Otter Creek. The Piute Reservoir was created on the main part of the Sevier River.
How Piute Got Its Name
Both the Piute Reservoir and the county it's in are named after the Paiute Native Americans. These Native American groups lived in this area a long time ago. The state government later changed the spelling of "Paiute" to "Piute" for the park and county. The park itself was officially created in 1963.
