About the Plain White T's
How the Band Started
The lead singer, Tom Higgenson, first wanted to be a drummer. He played in many bands during high school. But when the Plain White T's formed, he decided to sing and write songs. Ken Fletcher joined as the bassist, and Dave Tirio became the drummer. The band started playing shows in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Early Music Career (1999-2001)
At first, the band played songs by other artists. By the summer of 1999, music companies like Atlantic Recordings started to notice them. In 2000, they released their first album, "Come On Over". They toured around Chicago to help the album sell and gain more fans.
Changes and New Music (2001-2004)
In late 2001, Plain White T's left Atlantic Recordings. They then joined Fearless Records. They began working on their next album, called "Stop". They recorded it in Downers Grove, Illinois, and Santa Barbara, California. The album took four months to finish, ready in April 2002. It was released on August 20, 2002.
In October 2002, the band went on their first big tour. During this time, some band members changed. Dave Tirio switched from drums to guitar. Tim Lopez joined, replacing Steve. Mike Retondo became the new bassist, and De'Mar Hamilton took over on drums.
Growing Popularity (2004-2006)
The band went back to the studio in May 2004. They recorded their next album, "All That We Needed". After finishing the album, they toured across the US. During this tour, they released their first single, All That We Needed. They then promoted the album in other countries. This helped them gain more fans worldwide. They later joined the 2005 Take Action Tour.
During the "Take Action Tour '05", Plain White T's filmed their first music video. They hoped this new single would become even more famous.
The Every Second Counts Era (2006-Present)
In 2006, they signed with a new music company, Hollywood Records. They then started recording another new album. Before the album came out, they released the single "Hate (I Really Don't Like You)". This was their first song to become noticeably popular.
Plain White T's toured in late 2006. They were finally starting to get noticed in the music world. While they were becoming known in the US rock scene, they weren't as popular in other countries. Hollywood Records thought that releasing "Hey There Delilah" again would make the band famous everywhere.
Big Hit: Hey There Delilah
"Hey There Delilah" is an acoustic song. It was first released as a single in May 2006. It was also the last song on their album, All That We Needed. One year later, in 2007, the song became the band's first huge hit. On 11 July 2007, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 sales chart.
A month later, the song became a hit all over the world. Hey There Delilah reached number two in the UK and Ireland. It was number four in Australia and number six on the United World Chart. Its popularity also made it number one in countries like Germany and Canada.
