The plain prinia (Prinia inornata) is a small bird found in southeast Asia. People also call it the plain wren-warbler. This bird lives in countries like Pakistan, India, south China, and other parts of southeast Asia. It stays in these areas all year and does not fly away for winter.
Scientists once thought the plain prinia was the same as the tawny-flanked prinia from Africa. But now, they usually consider them two different types of birds.

What Does the Plain Prinia Look Like?
Plain prinias are small birds, about 13 to 14 centimeters (5 to 5.5 inches) long. They have short, rounded wings and a fairly long tail. Their legs are strong, and they have a short, black beak.
Colors and Markings
When it's time for them to breed, adult plain prinias are grey-brown on their backs. They have a short white stripe above their eye, which is called a supercilium. Their closed wings have reddish-brown edges. Their bellies are a whitish-buff color. Both male and female plain prinias look the same.
In winter, their backs become a warmer brown. Their bellies turn more buff-colored. Their tails also grow longer in winter. There are different types, or races, of plain prinias. These races have slightly different shades of feathers. For example, the plain prinia found only in Sri Lanka keeps its summer feathers and shorter tail all year.
Where Do Plain Prinias Live?
Plain prinias like to hide in tall grass and bushes. You can often find them in wet, low-lying grasslands. They also live in open woodlands, scrub areas, and sometimes even in gardens.
Nesting and Reproduction
This bird builds its nest in a bush or in tall grass. Female plain prinias usually lay three to six eggs. The tawny-flanked prinia, on the other hand, lays fewer eggs, usually two to four.
What Do Plain Prinias Eat?
Like most warblers, the plain prinia eats mostly insects. They are very good at finding tiny bugs to munch on.
Plain Prinia Song
The plain prinia has a song that sounds like a repeated tlee-tlee-tlee. It's a simple but clear sound.
