Plains is a small town located in Yoakum County, in the western part of Texas, United States. It's the main town, also called the county seat, for Yoakum County. In 2020, about 1,355 people lived there. Yoakum County is known for being part of the Texas High Plains Wine country.

History of Plains

The town of Plains was started in 1905 by W. J. Luna, who also gave it its name. When Yoakum County was officially set up in 1907, Plains was chosen to be its county seat. This means it became the center for the county's government. The town's population started to grow a lot after oil was found nearby in 1936.

Geography of Plains

Plains is located at 33°11′25″N 102°49′39″W / 33.19028°N 102.82750°W / 33.19028; -102.82750. The town covers about 1.0 square mile (2.6 square kilometers) of land.

A natural path called Sulphur Springs Draw goes through the town. This area used to have springs that fed a stream. However, these springs have dried up over time because of water being taken from underground.
