About Plainville

Plainville is a quiet place with an interesting history. It is known for its past connection to a big turkey farm. The area also has a very old and important house.

Plainville Turkey Farms

Plainville was once famous for its large Plainville Turkey Farms. This business was owned by the same family for a very long time. They started raising turkeys there in 1835. The family kept the farms until 2007. At that time, the business was sold to a company called Hain Celestial Group.

Later, in 2009, the turkey processing part of the business moved. It went to a different state, Pennsylvania. The Plainville plant, where the turkeys were processed, then closed down. This happened in 2010.

Whig Hill: A Historic House

West of Plainville, along Route 370, stands a very old house. It is called Whig Hill. This house was built in 1833. It is one of the most important historic homes in Onondaga County.

Whig Hill belonged to a man named James Leslie Voorhees. He was a wealthy landowner in the area. Mr. Voorhees also helped build many projects in New York City and Central New York. He was also involved in New York State politics.

Whig Hill's Recognition

Because of its history and importance, Whig Hill and Dependencies was added to a special list. This list is called the National Register of Historic Places. It was added in 1990. Being on this list means it is a place worth preserving.
