Early Life and Music Career
Planet Asia grew up in Fresno, California. In 1998, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. There, he started working with a music producer named Fanatik. From 1997 to 2001, Planet Asia released several songs on 12-inch records. These included "Definition of Ill" and "Place of Birth."
He became very well known in 2001. A music magazine called The Source gave him two big awards. He won "First Round Draft Pick" and "Independent Album of the Year." These awards were for his album How the West Was One. He made this album with another rapper, Rasco, as part of their group Cali Agents. This success helped him get a record deal with Interscope Records.
While at Interscope Records, Planet Asia did not release an album. He stayed with them until 2003. In 2002, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for a song called "W" by Mystic.
Later Career and Own Label
In 2003, another record company, Avatar Records, signed Planet Asia. In 2004, they released his first official album, The Grand Opening. People really liked this album. It earned him another "Independent Album of the Year" award from The Source magazine.
One of his songs, "G's & Soldiers," which featured Kurupt, was used in the 2005 movie Be Cool. This movie starred John Travolta.
After leaving Avatar Records, Planet Asia started his own music company. He named it Gold Chain Music. He started it with Walt Liquor. His next album, The Medicine, came out in 2006. It was produced by Evidence from the group Dilated Peoples. Other producers like The Alchemist also helped.
In 2007, he released "The Jewelry Box Sessions: The Album" on his own label. In 2010, he worked with a Malaysian artist named Mizz Nina on a song called Hope. In 2011, Planet Asia was a judge on a TV show called Ultimate MC. Other famous rappers like Royce da 5'9" and Sean Price were also judges.
More recently, on September 8, 2023, Planet Asia and Apollo Brown released a joint album. It was called "Sardines." Many people saw it as a follow-up to their popular 2017 album, "Anchovies."
