Plaza de la Candelaria facts for kids
The Plaza de la Candelaria is a well-known square in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This city is located in the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain. The square is right next to another important spot called the Plaza de España.
In the middle of the Plaza de la Candelaria, you'll find a special monument called the Triunfo de la Candelaria. It's also known as the Obelisk of La Candelaria. This monument is one of the most important sculptures in the city. It honors the Virgin of Candelaria, who is considered the patroness (or special protector) of the Canary Islands. The square itself is named after her!
The Triunfo de la Candelaria Monument
The Triunfo de la Candelaria, or Obelisco de la Candelaria, is a very important sculpture in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is made from beautiful white marble. A sculptor named Pasquale Bocciardo carved it way back in 1768.
This monument is about 4 meters tall today. At its base, there are four marble statues. These statues show the Guanches, who were the native people of the Canary Islands. They are shown looking up at the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, which is placed at the very top of the obelisk. This shows how much the Guanches respected her.
You can also find special messages carved into the monument. These messages talk about how much the people of the Canary Islands have always honored the Virgin. For a long time, this monument was the first important religious symbol that travelers saw when they arrived in Tenerife.
Today, in May, people celebrate the "Fiestas de Mayo" (May Festivals). This celebrates the founding of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During this time, people bring flowers and offer them at the base of the Triunfo de la Candelaria. It's a colorful and traditional event!
