History of the Bullring
How It Was Built
The bullring was designed by an architect named Joaquín Rucoba. He also designed another important building in Málaga, the Mercado de Atarazanas.
Building work on La Malagueta started on June 16, 1874. There was a short break in construction from December 1874 to October 1875. The bullring officially opened on June 11, 1876. The first event was a traditional corrida de toros, which is a type of bullfight.
Protecting a Historic Site
In 1976, La Malagueta was recognized as a "Conjunto histórico." This means it was declared a historic site because of its importance. Later, in 1981, it was also named a "Bien de Interés Cultural." This is a special title that adds it to the list of national heritage sites in Spain, showing how valuable it is.
Modern Updates
Starting in 2017, the bullring underwent a two-year renovation. The main goal was to update the inside of the building. This way, it could be used as a cultural center all year round, not just for bullfighting events.
About the Building
Design and Capacity
The design of La Malagueta is in the Neo-Mudéjar style. This style often uses brickwork and decorative patterns inspired by old Moorish architecture in Spain. The building has a unique shape with 16 sides, which is called a hexadecagon.
After some updates in 2010, the arena can now hold up to 9,032 people. The main ring where events take place is 52 meters (about 170 feet) wide.
Inside the Complex
The bullring complex is quite large. It includes:
- Four big pens for animals.
- Ten smaller holding pens.
- Stables for horses.
- Dressing rooms for performers.
- A first aid post for emergencies.
- Offices for managing the bullring.
- The Museo Taurino Antonio Ordóñez, which is a museum about bullfighting.
Events and Festivals
La Malagueta hosts many events during the Spanish-style bullfighting season. Some special events include:
- Two bullfights during Holy Week. One of these is the Corrida Picassiana, named after the famous artist Pablo Picasso.
- The Corrida de la Prensa (Press Bullfight) in June. This event honors Málaga's patron saints, Ciriaco and Paula. They were martyred in Málaga in the year 303 AD.
- The bullring is also a big part of the Feria de Agosto, which is Málaga's main summer festival.
- The last bullfight of the season happens in September. It is held to honor Our Lady of Victory, who is the patron saint of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Málaga.
