Pleasant Hill is a small, unincorporated community in Dallas County, Alabama. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government.

The Story of Pleasant Hill

Pleasant Hill started out as a place called Fort Rascal. This was a trading post, a special place where people could trade goods and supplies. This happened before many Native American groups were moved from their lands.

In 1828, the community got its own post office. At that time, its name was changed to Pleasant Hill.

Famous Visitor and His Book

A famous English naturalist named Philip Henry Gosse visited Pleasant Hill in 1838. A naturalist is someone who studies nature, like plants and animals. Gosse stayed for eight months. During his visit, he taught at a school for Reuben Saffold. Saffold was a planter, which means he owned a large farm. He was also a judge on the Supreme Court of Alabama.

Gosse spent his time studying and drawing the plants and animals of the area. He also wrote about his observations of daily life there. Later, he published a book called Letters from Alabama, sharing what he learned and saw.
