Pleasantville has an interesting past. It was once a very busy "oil boom town." This means that when oil was discovered nearby, many people moved there quickly to work. Its population grew from 291 people in 1860 to 1,598 people by 1870! However, the oil boom didn't last forever. By 1880, the population had gone down to 855 people. Since then, the number of people living in Pleasantville has stayed pretty much the same.

Pleasantville was first settled in 1821 and officially became a borough in 1850. Its history is closely tied to the oil industry in Pennsylvania.

Two important old buildings in Pleasantville are the Allegheny Baptist Church and the Connely-Holeman House. These buildings are so special that they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are protected because of their historical importance.
