History of Pleasureville
In 1784, a group of about 30 Dutch families bought a large piece of land. It was about 10,000 acres (40 square kilometers). They bought it from Squire Boone, who was the brother of the famous explorer Daniel Boone. These families built a fort to protect themselves. This fort was about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of where north Pleasureville is today.
Their land was shared and farmed together. Abraham Banta managed the land for everyone. This area was called different names. Some names were "The Dutch Tract" or "Low Dutch Settlement." It was also known as "Bantatown."
The post office for the area was set up around 1828. It was named Pleasureville. The city officially became a city in 1842 under this name. People say the name "Pleasureville" came from a visitor. The visitor said it was a "pleasure" to stay among such nice people.
Railroad and Town Split
In 1858, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad came to the area. But the train tracks were built about a mile south of the original community. So, the post office moved to the new settlement near the train station in 1874. This new settlement also took the name Pleasureville.
The older part of the city then became known as North Pleasureville. It got its own post office in 1879.
Merging North and South Town
The two parts of the city, Pleasureville and North Pleasureville, joined together in 1962. Even today, local people sometimes call them North Town and South Town.
