Pleyto is a small, unincorporated community located in Monterey County, California. The name "Pleyto" comes from a Spanish word meaning "Plea." This community sits right beside the San Antonio River. It is about 12.5 miles (20.1 km) southeast of a place called Jolon. Pleyto is located at an elevation of 781 feet (238 meters) above sea level.

Pleyto: A Community Lost to Water

Pleyto is a unique place because its original location is now underwater. This happened when Lake San Antonio was created. It's like a town that disappeared beneath the waves!

The Beginning of Pleyto

Pleyto was founded a long time ago, in 1868. A person named William Pinkerton started the town. He named it after a special piece of land called the Rancho Pleyto. This was a large land grant from the Mexican government.

Mail Service in Pleyto

Even though it was a small community, Pleyto had its own post office. Mail service is very important for connecting people. The post office first opened in 1870. It stayed open for a couple of years, until 1872. Then it reopened in 1874 and closed again in 1876.

A Name Change and More Mail

In 1884, the community's name changed slightly. It went from "Pleito" to "Pleyto." After this change, the post office opened once more. This time, it stayed open for a long time, from 1884 until 1925.

Where Pleyto Is Now

Today, if you visit the area where Pleyto used to be, you won't find the old town. That's because its original site is now covered by the waters of Lake San Antonio. This lake was built to store water and control floods. So, Pleyto lives on in history, even if its old buildings are gone.
