Plimmer Towers is a tall building in the center of Wellington, New Zealand. It holds both offices and a hotel. The building gets its name from John Plimmer, who was a very important business and political leader in Wellington's early days.
Standing 25 floors tall and reaching 84 meters (about 275 feet) high, Plimmer Towers was once the tallest building in New Zealand when it was finished in 1977. It held this title until 1981, when the Quay Tower in Auckland became taller.

Building History and Changes
Plimmer Towers was first built by Arthur Williams, a well-known person in the construction business. It opened in 1977 and was called the Williams Centre. At that time, it was the tallest building in Wellington.
In 1984, another building nearby, the BNZ Centre, became taller than the Williams Centre. A second tower, which looked just like the first, was added in 1985.
New Owners and Names
Arthur Williams sold the building in 1986 to a company called Smart Group NZ. This company faced big problems during the 1987 stock market crash, which was a time when many businesses lost a lot of money.
Later, in 1993, a company from Singapore called Grand Central Group bought the building. They changed its name to Plimmer City Centre. The hotel part of the building was also given a new name, Copthorne.
Modern Updates
In 2010, the building got a big update. It was renovated and repainted by its current owners, Eureka Funds Management and the Toga Group, both from Australia. The hotel part of the building then became known as a Travelodge hotel.
Why the Building Looks Taller on One Side
Plimmer Towers is built on a slope. This means that one side of the building, facing Lambton Quay, looks much taller from the street. On that side, it appears to be 31 floors high and reaches 106 meters (about 348 feet) above the street. However, on the other side, it is still 25 floors and 84 meters tall, as originally measured.
