Discovering Plummer Glacier
This glacier was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This mapping happened between 1961 and 1966. Scientists used special surveys and photos taken from U.S. Navy airplanes to create the maps.
How Plummer Glacier Got Its Name
The glacier was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN). They chose the name to honor Charles C. Plummer. He was a glaciologist with the United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP). A glaciologist is a scientist who studies glaciers and ice. Charles Plummer worked at Palmer Station in 1965, studying the ice and its movements.
