Pluto is a small, quiet community located in Raleigh County, West Virginia. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Pluto sits at an elevation of about 2,589 feet (789 meters) above sea level.

The Story Behind Pluto's Name

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? The community of Pluto was named after Pluto, a powerful god from ancient Greek mythology. In these old stories, Pluto was known as the ruler of the underworld.

A Historic Landmark: The Old Log Church

One of the most important places in Pluto is the Pluto Missionary Baptist Church. People often call it the Old Log Church because of how it was built.

Building the Church in 1893

The church was first built in 1893. A man named Jim Meador generously donated the land for the church. The logs used to build the church came from Meador's own property. Jesse Harris was the person who sawed and shaped these logs. The pulpit, which is the stand where a speaker delivers a sermon, was carefully made by Gus Samples. He was a skilled local carpenter and joiner.
