Discovering Población de Campos's Past
Población de Campos has a rich history that goes back many centuries. It was once an important place, especially for travelers.
Early Beginnings and Roman Times
This town likely started around the 800s. However, there might have been a Roman farm or village here even earlier. Digs at a place called Loncejares suggest this. The town's location on a high spot and a neighborhood named "Castle" hint that it once had protective walls and maybe even a real castle!
Knights and Kings: A Medieval Story
From the mid-1100s, Población de Campos was controlled by a group called the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. These were brave knights, also known as the Knights of Rhodes and Malta. In 1140, King Alfonso VII gave this special right to the Order. This meant the knights had power and authority over the town.
The Famous Way of St. James
Since the 900s, Población de Campos has been a stop on the famous Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James. This is a very old Christian pilgrim path that leads to Santiago de Compostela. The town even has a "French street," showing its connection to travelers from other countries.
Hospitals for Pilgrims
When the Camino de Santiago was most popular, Población de Campos had two well-known hospitals. These were called Our Lady of Mercy and San Miguel Hospital. They provided care and rest for the many pilgrims walking the long journey.
