A Look Back: The History of Pocahontas

The village of Pocahontas has had a few different names over the years. It was first known as Hickory Grove. Later, its name changed to Amity.

In 1850, the name was changed again to Pocohontas, spelled with an "o". Then, in 1855, the spelling was updated to the current "Pocahontas," using an "a." The village was officially formed, or incorporated, in 1847. It was named after a type of coal called Pocahontas Coal.
