Poco Lena: A Champion Horse
Early Life and Amazing Skills
Poco Lena was born in 1949. Her father was a famous horse named Poco Bueno. Her mother was Sheilwin, a daughter of Pretty Boy. Poco Lena was a natural at cutting. Cutting is a horse sport where a horse and rider work together. They separate one cow from a herd and keep it from returning. It takes a lot of skill and quick moves from the horse.
A Champion's Achievements
Poco Lena won many awards during her career. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) gave her several top honors. She became an AQHA Champion. She also earned a Performance Register of Merit. She was named a Superior Cutting Horse. This means she was one of the best at cutting. She was also a Superior Halter Horse. This award is for a horse's excellent looks and build.
Poco Lena was the AQHA High Point Cutting Horse for three years. She won this title in 1959, 1960, and 1961. With the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA), she won nearly $100,000 in contests. This was a huge amount of money back then! She also received a Certificate of Ability. She earned Bronze and Silver Awards from the NCHA. Later, she was honored by being added to the NCHA Horse Hall of Fame.
Facing Challenges and Becoming a Mother
In late 1961, Poco Lena became very sick. She suffered from a hoof condition called laminitis. Luckily, she got better and even started competing again. But in October 1962, her owner, B. A. Skipper Jr., sadly passed away in a plane crash. During the confusion after this event, Poco Lena was left alone. She was in a trailer for four days without food or water. This caused her to get laminitis again. After this, she could no longer compete.
Later, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Jensen bought Poco Lena. They were the owners of another famous horse, Doc Bar. They took great care of Poco Lena. Even though she was still recovering, she was able to have two foals. Both of her foals were sired by Doc Bar. These were Doc O'Lena and Dry Doc. Both of these sons grew up to be champions themselves. They each won the NCHA Cutting Futurity, a very important competition.
A Lasting Legacy
After giving birth to Dry Doc, Poco Lena's health worsened. She was very sick from her hoof condition. On December 16, 1968, she was humanely put to sleep.
Poco Lena's impact on the Quarter Horse world was huge. She was not only a great competitor but also a mother to champions. Because of her amazing achievements and her famous offspring, she was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. Her name lives on as one of the most important cutting mares in history.
