Point Comfort is a special old house located on South Skatutakee Road in Harrisville, New Hampshire. It was built in 1892. This house is important because it was one of the first summer homes built near Skatutakee Lake. It mixes different building styles, like Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it is a place that is important to the history of the United States.

What Makes Point Comfort Special?

Point Comfort is found southeast of the main part of Harrisville. It sits on about 1.8 acres of land. The house is right between the south shore of Skatutakee Lake and South Skatutakee Road. It is about 0.4 miles east of Main Street.

House Design and Features

The house has 2-1/2 stories and is made of wood. It has a T-shape with sloped roofs and wood shingles on the outside. The design is a mix of styles, with steep gables (the triangular parts of the roof). You can see the ends of the roof beams, which is a cool design choice. There are also decorative boards under the roof edges.

Inside, the house has a special fireplace mantel in the Arts and Crafts style. The walls are covered with birch wood panels. The porch facing the lake has been closed in, making it an extra room. The property also has two other small buildings: an old shed and a newer garage.

History of the Summer Home

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, some parts of Harrisville became popular spots for summer vacations. People came from places like Boston and New York City. However, Skatutakee Lake was mostly a summer getaway for business people from nearby towns. These towns included Keene and Marlborough.

Point Comfort was built in 1892. We know this from a date found on the back of the fireplace mantel. It was probably built by someone who lived in Keene. This house is one of the oldest buildings still standing around Skatutakee Lake.
