Pointrest was once a small, unincorporated community in Perry County, Missouri, United States. It was located in Bois Brule Township. Today, Pointrest is an abandoned village, meaning no one lives there anymore.
The Story of Pointrest
Pointrest first began as a place called Point Rest Landing. This was a busy spot where boats could stop along the Mississippi River. People would load and unload goods there. The community had a church, called Trinity Lutheran Church. There was also a general store, known as the Wichern Store.
Over the years, Pointrest faced many challenges. The area suffered from several floods, especially a very big one in 1927. Also, as trains became a popular way to move goods and people, river travel became less important. Because of the floods and the decline in river traffic, the community slowly faded away. Today, there are no buildings left from the old community. The land where Pointrest once stood is now farmland.
Where Was Pointrest?
Pointrest was located in the eastern part of Perry County, Missouri. It was right on the Mississippi River. The community was inside an area protected by a levee, called the Bois Brule Bottom. A levee is a wall built to prevent a river from overflowing.
A post office was opened in Pointrest in 1892. The name of the community was spelled "Point Rest" until 1895. The "point" in the name refers to a rocky ledge that stuck out into the Mississippi River.
