Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness are exciting video games for the Nintendo DS. They are part of the popular Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. These games are the follow-up to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team.

The games first came out in Japan on September 13, 2007. They were released in North America on April 20, 2008. European players could get them starting July 4, 2008, and in Australia on June 19, 2008.

What Are These Games About?

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, you play as a human who has turned into a Pokémon. You also lose your memory! You wake up in a world where only Pokémon live. Soon, you meet a partner Pokémon who helps you. Together, you join a special team called an "exploration team."

Your Mission

Your main goal is to explore mysterious dungeons. These dungeons are always changing, so each time you enter, it's a new adventure. You will find treasure, rescue other Pokémon, and uncover secrets. The story is all about solving a big mystery that could affect the future of the Pokémon world.

Saving the Future

The games' story focuses on time travel and preventing a dark future. A powerful outlaw named Grovyle is stealing special items called Time Gears. These gears control the flow of time in different places. If they are all stolen, the world will freeze! You and your partner must stop Grovyle and save time itself.

Gameplay Basics

The games are known as "roguelike" role-playing games. This means the dungeons are randomly generated. Every time you enter a dungeon, its layout, items, and enemies are different. This makes each trip unique and challenging.

Exploring Dungeons

You move your Pokémon through the dungeon grids. When you meet an enemy Pokémon, you take turns attacking. You can use different Pokémon moves and items to help you. Your team can have up to four Pokémon. You can recruit defeated enemy Pokémon to join your team.

Your Base: Wigglytuff's Guild

Your adventure starts at Wigglytuff's Guild. This is where you learn how to be an explorer. You get missions from a job board, train, and prepare for your journeys. The guild is also where you meet many interesting Pokémon characters.

Characters You'll Meet

The games feature many Pokémon from different generations. Some are friendly and helpful, while others are rivals or villains.

  • Your Character: You can choose to be one of several starter Pokémon. This includes popular ones like Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.
  • Your Partner: Your partner Pokémon is always by your side. They are often a bit shy but very brave.
  • Wigglytuff: The cheerful and powerful Guildmaster of Wigglytuff's Guild.
  • Chatot: Wigglytuff's assistant. He is strict but cares a lot about the guild members.
  • Grovyle: A mysterious Pokémon from the future. He is initially seen as a villain, but his true intentions are part of the main story.
  • Dialga: The Legendary Pokémon of time. It plays a very important role in the game's plot.

Time vs. Darkness

Like many Pokémon games, Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness are very similar. They have the same story and gameplay. However, there are a few small differences:

  • Exclusive Pokémon: Each version has a few Pokémon that you can only find in that specific game. For example, Explorers of Time has Celebi, while Explorers of Darkness has Mewtwo.
  • Items: Some items might be easier to find in one version compared to the other.

These small changes encourage players to trade with friends who have the other version.
