The town is named after its founder, Leonidas L. Polk. He was an important person in North Carolina's history.

History of Polkton
Polkton was started by Leonidas Lafayette Polk. It officially became a town, or "incorporated," in 1875. This means it got its own local government.
A special place called the Billy Horne Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history.
