Polygonum striatulum, also known as the striped knotweed or Texas knotweed, is a special plant. It naturally grows only in the state of Texas in the United States. However, people sometimes grow it in other places because it is a pretty plant to look at.

About the Striped Knotweed

The striped knotweed is a type of plant called a perennial herb. This means it is not woody like a tree, and it lives for more than two years. It can grow to be about 100 to 700 meters (around 330 to 2,300 feet) above sea level.

What Does It Look Like?

The leaves of the striped knotweed are shaped like a spear, which is called "lanceolate." They can grow up to 35 millimeters (about 1.4 inches) long. The leaves found higher up on the plant are usually bigger than the ones closer to the ground.

The plant also has flowers! These flowers grow in groups at the very top of the plant and at the ends of its branches. Each group of flowers usually has 2 to 6 small flowers that can be white or a light pink color.

Where Does It Grow?

This plant likes to grow in certain types of places in Texas. You can find it in dry, open grasslands, which are sometimes called "sterile prairies." It also likes soils that have a lot of granite rocks. The striped knotweed also grows well in spots that get wet during certain times of the year, like after it rains a lot.

How Does It Grow?

The striped knotweed is good at spreading! It grows using special underground stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes spread out under the ground, and new plants can grow from them. This helps the plant create new patches and grow bigger over time.
