Pomanda Island is a small island located in Lake Alexandrina in South Australia. It is about 87 kilometers (54 miles) southeast of the city of Adelaide. The island is also about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of the town of Wellington.

Pomanda Island covers an area of about 34 hectares (84 acres). That's roughly the size of 63 football fields!

Why is Pomanda Island Important?

Pomanda Island was once considered for a very important project. There was a plan to build a temporary weir near the island. A weir is like a small dam that controls the flow of water.

Protecting Water Supplies

This proposed weir would have been about 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) long. Its main purpose was to protect the fresh water in the Murray River. The Murray River is a vital source of water for many people in South Australia.

The weir would have helped if sea water ever threatened to flow into Lake Alexandrina. Keeping the sea water out would protect the drinking water supply for many communities. This plan shows how important it is to manage our water resources carefully.
