History of Pomo
The Pomo People
The name Pomo comes from a village of the Pomo people. This village was first written about in 1851. It was located on the east bank of the Russian River. Later, a gristmill (a mill for grinding grain) was built on the same spot.
Early Services and Community Life
A post office served the Pomo area from 1870 to 1871. It opened again from 1872 to 1881, and then from 1882 to 1911. A store also opened in Pomo in 1874.
Around 1875, Pomo had a school with 34 students. There was also a Pomo Grange, which was a group for farmers, with 75 members. A Templars lodge, a type of social club, met weekly at "the Hall." In the 1880s, a church meeting was held monthly in Pomo.
Later Years
In 1881, there were reports of timber wolves killing sheep near Pomo. The school was still open in Pomo in 1892. However, by 1904, the school had very few students. In the 1950s, the Pomo Athletic Club had a basketball team that played in a league.
