Pooja Gauthami Umashankar is a talented actress from both India and Sri Lanka. She is well-known for her roles in Tamil films in India and Sinhala films in Sri Lanka.

Pooja's Early Life and Family
Pooja's father, H. R. Umashankar, is from Sringeri, India. Her mother, Sandhya, is from Sri Lanka. Her dad worked as a manager for a company called Hindustan Unilever.
Pooja started school in Sri Lanka. Later, she moved to India for more schooling. She went to schools in Chikmagalur and Mysore. She also studied at Baldwin Girls' High School in Bangalore. Pooja earned her college degree and a master's degree from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.
Pooja can speak many languages. She knows Kannada, Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
In December 2016, Pooja married Prashan David Vethakan. He is a businessman from Sri Lanka.
Pooja's Acting Journey
Pooja started acting after a friend introduced her to director Jeeva. He offered her a role in his Tamil film Ullam Ketkumae. Pooja first thought she would just do this one movie. She planned to use the money and go back to her studies.
But then, she got another offer to act with R. Madhavan. She decided to take that role too. Her second film, Jay Jay (2004), came out first. Pooja got good reviews for her acting in Jay Jay. Critics liked her bright eyes and smile.
Next, she starred with Ajith Kumar in Attahasam. This movie was a big success. After that, Ullam Ketkumae finally came out. Pooja was one of the five main actors in it. The film was well-liked and became a hit.
Pooja also acted in other Tamil films like Thambi and Pori. In 2007, she appeared in a Malayalam film called Panthaya Kozhi.
A very important role for Pooja was in Bala's film Naan Kadavul. She played Hamshavalli, a blind beggar. Her acting in this role was highly praised. She won several awards for it, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil.
After Naan Kadavul, Pooja took a break from acting. She only appeared in small guest roles for a while. These included films like TN-07 AL 4777 and Orange.
In 2012, her big movie Kusa Pabha was released. It became the highest-earning film in Sri Lankan history. Pooja received praise for her role as Pabawathi in this film.
