History of the Chapel
The Poole Methodist Chapel was built a long time ago, in 1834. It was first known as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The Wesleyan Methodists were a group of Christians who followed the teachings of John Wesley.
What the Chapel Looks Like
The chapel has a unique design, inspired by Gothic Revival style.
Outside the Chapel
Poole Methodist Chapel is a small building. It is shaped like a square and is made from red bricks. The roof is made of slate and slopes downwards on all sides, which is called a hipped roof.
The front of the chapel, where you enter, has three main sections. The main door is in the middle. It has special wooden panels and a design that looks like old Gothic churches. The top of the doorway is rounded. Above the door, there's a special board with seven lines that spread out like rays.
Above the doorway, there is a curved stone decoration called a hood mould. Above that, you can see a light and an oval sign. This sign says "Wesleyan Methodist Chapel" and the year "1834". On each side of the door, there is a tall, arched window. These windows have a special pattern of stone or wood inside them, called Y-tracery, which also looks Gothic. The bricks under the roof have a decorative pattern that looks like teeth, called dentils.
Inside the Chapel
When you go inside the chapel, you will see a wooden reading desk. This desk has panels and a fancy base. On each side of the desk, there are three steps with decorative railings and posts.
Behind the reading desk is a special panelled wall called a reredos. The middle part of this wall is wider and has a rounded top. It is decorated with pretty designs like garlands and roses. The chapel also has a communion table, which is used for special services, and communion rails. There is also an old-fashioned organ that works by pressing pedals, called a treadle organ.
