Surfing in Popoyo
Popoyo is a very popular place for surfing. This is because Nicaragua often has strong offshore winds. These winds help create perfect waves for surfing.
- Popoyo Outer Reef is a challenging surf spot. It's best for experienced surfers. The waves here are powerful and break over a reef. They can go both left and right. Sometimes, you can even find a thick barrel section, which is when the wave curls over you.
- Playa Santana is another great spot. It's about 20 minutes from Popoyo. This beach break consistently has good waves.
- The Popoyo Surf Zone is amazing for surfers. It has many different types of waves. These include point breaks, beach breaks, and reef breaks. The area catches the power of swells coming from the south. Plus, winds from Lake Nicaragua blow offshore all day. This combination makes for fantastic surfing conditions.
